About Cowichan knits
Cowichan knitting is a form of knitting characteristic of the Cowichan tribes people of southeastern Vancouver Island, Canada. Cowichan sweaters and cardigans are always hand knitted and made of thick, handspun, one-ply natural-coloured yarn in two or three colours, producing a warm bulky outer garment. The classic Cowichan of the 20th century was knitted in coat style, fastened at the front by buttons or a zip, hip-length, with a shawl collar, and usually ornamented with indigenous or sporting motifs.
