RETAIL GURU MARY PORTAS ON STYLE

Mary Portas: On Style

Mary Portas: On Style is the new BBC Radio 4 series where style meets substance. Style doyenne Mary Portas takes the helm of her first series on Radio 4 this autumn.

Examining style and design in what we wear and how we live, this programme looks at the expression of style in areas such as clothing, architecture and interiors, whilst delving into the values and attitudes behind them.

Mary Portas: On Style talks to design professionals from a whole range of areas,  including the world’s foremost trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort, fashion activist Carry Somers, Deyan Sudjic, Director of the Design Museum London and Mateo Kries, Director of the Vitra Design Museum in Germany.

Cult street-style star Miss Jason of Jason’s Closet will be the programme’s 'on the road' reporter visiting UK cities to discover what people are wearing and buying today.

The programme  also looks at the emotional connection we can have with material culture.

Mary Portas says: “Style is something that’s totally innate yet at the same time, outwardly facing. Because style can reveal the attitudes, passions, desires, and beliefs not just of an individual, but of an entire society. In this programme I explore what style means to us and the way we live today, and talk to some hugely talented and brilliant people in the process.”

In its most recent report the Design Council calculated that design generated £82.5 billion in gross value added to the UK economy. This programme will celebrate the sector’s successes whilst examining challenges such as sustainability and pollution.

Radio 4’s Commissioning Editor for Arts, James Runcie, adds: “When it comes to style experts few surpass Mary Portas. Her authority on, and insight on the subject of design, will illuminate the topic for Radio 4 audiences and invite listeners to think about their own relationship with style.”
