Have you ever wondered what celebrities from decades ago would look like if they were famous now rather than back then? Probably not, but this concept has been artistically explored by Instagrammer Mat Maitland.

Suddenly Elizabeth Taylor has plumped up lips and Marilyn Monroe has filled out cheeks. Mat has altered past celebs images to look as if they have had modern injectibles such as Botox and cosmetic surgery.

We are so used to seeing these nips and tucks on modern day celebs that at first it doesn't look odd on past stars. Or does it? Let us know your views in the comments below?

Speaking to PAPER Magazine, Instagram artist Mat Maitland said: “Some people might look at this series and believe that I am making a hard commentary on cosmetic procedures. This isn't the case at all. I've always been fascinated by people who push beauty to the extreme. One of my heroes, Michael Jackson, explored the idea of transformation early on in his career.

“Cosmetic approaches to beauty were previously restricted to celebrities and the mega wealthy but these have now become more attainable. Everywhere you look there is evidence of these contemporary ideals of beauty. You can observe the new normal across the world. This is what made me think about identity in our contemporary world. I started to imagine some of the most idolised stars embracing cosmetic procedures and trends if they were still alive today. Celebrities of the past altering their iconic looks to fit in with today's more clone-like ideals."

But looking at these altered images does show us just how the idea of what is 'beautiful' does change depending on which decade you are in. Something to think about.
